Mons. Melchor Sánchez de Toca y Alameda

Movements in popular religiosity

Born in Jaca (Spain) in 1966. Priest in the archdiocese of Toledo (Spain) since 1993.

He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid (1989) and then studied theology at the San Ildefonso Higher Institute of Theological Studies of Toledo. In Rome, he studied biblical theology at the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical Gregorian University, which he graduated from in 1996. In 2006, he completed his Doctorate in Theology at that same university with a thesis on the relations between faith and culture in the contemporary Church.

He exercised his priestly ministry as chaplain at the Civil Engineering School of the Polytechnic University of Madrid and as an ecclesiastical assistant to youth. Since 1999, he has worked in service of the Holy See at the Pontifical Council for Culture and was named undersecretary in 2004. On the Council, he has worked on the dialog between faith and science as coordinator of the STOQ project. Currently he works in the field of culture and sport.

His fields of interest include the relationships between religion and culture, particularly the dialog between faith and science and faith and sport.
